ABOUT US

We are the Edwardsburg High School Robotics Team, the Iron Giants 5069. Robotics provides training in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). We allow students to explore their interests in business, marketing, media, design, programming, and building. This program is hands-on and student-led. We teach students life skills such as team-work, time management, responsibility, and integrity. Every year we fund, design, build and program a robot used to compete in tournaments run by FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology). The organization’s goal is to inspire young people to be leaders in science and technology. We are parT of FRC (FIRST Robotics Competition), the largest and most intense FIRST competition.

the rundown

The team’s build season begins in January when students put their skills to the test. They then have 6 weeks to design, build and program a robot. Their work schedule will be grueling, typically devoting 5 evenings a week, as well as Saturdays, to their task.
All of their hard work will pay off during competition season, though. Their goal this year is to not only qualify for the State Championship but to also earn an invitation to the World competition.

Team members are already learning a variety of skills, including:

CAD, to design the robot & create 3D models of the parts

Labview, to program the robot to perform the required tasks

Wood and metal fabrication, to build the robot

Marketing, to raise money for parts and competition fees, and promote the team to businesses and the community

These specialized skills that team members learn have proven valuable in obtaining internships and jobs, as well as preparing students for college. In fact, 80% of the team’s graduating seniors have gone on to STEM-related fields of study.

Impact

Robotics provides students with many STEM related opportunities. It has gotten many people internships for their skills in CAD, programming, and machining. In addition, 100% of our team members have graduated and chose to further their education. Over 85% of these members have gone pursued a STEAM related career. Robotics also has scholarship opportunities for people interested in STEAM-related careers.

First

FIRST inspires today’s youth to pursue STEM educations and careers (Science, Math, Engineering, and Technology) through engagement in fun, but rigorous, programs and activities. FIRST strives to create the leaders of tomorrow.

The founder of FIRST is Dean Kamen, an inventor, entrepreneur, and advocate for the emphasis of STEM in young people. His passion and determination have transformed FIRST into the leading not-for-profit STEM engagement program for kids and teenagers worldwide.

FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) is the FIRST program that The Iron Giants Robotics Team is a part of. This program is the most complex format of FIRST programs and is open to students grades 9 through 12.

Every year, a new game is revealed. FRC teams have 6 weeks to design, build, and program robots for the new game. This year's game is Infinite Recharge. Details about this game can be found
